Located a convenient 2 hour drive from Johannesburg International Airport near the town of Middleburg, Ragged Stone is one of South Africa's newest and most exclusive hunting preserves. Specializing in plains game and bird hunting, Ragged Stone provides three thousand acres of prime hunting country with high veldt, bush veldt and natural river front hunting areas. |

A Safari at Ragged stone is as active or as relaxed as you want to make it. There is no pressure to hunt all your animals in one day nor is there pressure to hunt at all if you don't want to. You may choose to enjoy a late start and have a day of fishing instead. However for the hunter in all of us, Ragged Stone is first and foremost a hunting camp and as such most guests rise early and are most active during the daylight hours. Remember the early bird catches the worm. This is especially true of hunting in Africa
Observers may join the hunters on their hunts or spend the day sunbathing on the sundecks, where gin & tonics and conversation flow freely. Be prepared to relax as time slows down in the African veldt and the rhythms of nature soothe your cares and worries away. A typical daily program is :
0600hrs Coffee & Rusks
0630hrs Hunt
1030hrs Brunch
1230hrs Siesta
1330hrs Hunt
1530hrs Field Lunch
1600hrs Hunt
1800hrs Sundowners (drinks & snacks)
2030hrs Dinner |

We use vehicles in the spot and stalk method. An animal is sighted from the vehicle, at which point the hunters dismount and stalk it on foot. You may choose other methods of hunting depending on your level of experience, your level of physical fitness and other factors. |
|
|
 |
While on your hunt you may have the opportunity to stalk another animal. You are more than welcome to take the trophy, you only have to indicate this to the professional hunter with you. Let him know that you understand the additional cost of the animal and that it is outside your paid Safari package. Observers are allowed to hunt if they wish to, but are limited to the hunting of only one animal at the full trophy rate.

All animals on ragged stone are kept in the peak of health, only selected animals are hunted and Professional huntsmen are engaged to lead the groups to ensure this. Animals on Ragged Stone are also bred and maintained for the restocking of other game parks and reserves. As such though a hunting preserve, Ragged Stone is also playing a part in maintaining and perpetuating good genetic stock of common and exotic game species.
Nothing goes to waste from your hunt. Besides the trophy and the choice cuts of meat that you are welcome to take, all other meat and offal is used by the staff or sold to the butcher. As such the animal you hunt becomes meals for many of the staff on the farm and their families. |

On Ragged Stone, we encourage our hunters to participate in all stages of the hunt, from hunt planning, to stalking, to field dressing and game cooking. The hunters with strong constitutions get the most out of the basic butchery tips given by their guides and benefit greatly from the experience. We seek to enlighten and educate our guests so that they may gain added knowledge and respect for their quarry. |

A: No it isn't, the urban centres are where most crimes happen. Ragged Stone is located far away from those areas and as our valued guest, you will be met inside Johannesburg International Airport and escorted from then on by our staff who will see to your safety.
A: We have no large predators on Ragged Stone, however as with every wild place there are a few snakes, spiders and scorpions. If one is cautious, there should be no problems with any of these creatures.
A: Ragged Stone is located at the altitude of 1500m above sea level. As such though we have a few mosquitoes, the malarial transmitting species is not encountered on Ragged Stone. Larium & Chloroquin are not needed on a visit to Ragged Stone. We recommend that you bring whatever prescription medications you use as well as a basic traveler's medical kit. It is wise when holidaying in Africa to get full travel and medical insurance for your trip. We can recommend a policy if you would like single trip insurance. Inoculations for typhoid & tetanus are strongly recommended as a safety precaution. A comprehensive first aid kit is carried by your professional hunter while hunting .
A: Our nearest hospital is in Middleburg, 35 minutes drive away.
A: It is pretty hard to get lost on Ragged Stone. The property is mostly covered by Mobile networks(gsm), guests are always with staff and staff have radio communications with the main lodges and manager's residence.
A: We cater to hunters of all levels of experience. We prefer that the hunter has some passing knowledge about the sport. If you are a total novice, shooting lessons can be had from Blaze Sporting Clays, 2-4 sessions should make it easy for you to transition from target shooting to the basics hunting game in Africa . We do stress high levels of firearms safety for all including observers, so please be prepared, by having a word with Blaze Sporting Clays.
A: If you wound an animal, every effort will be made to track it, so that we may shoot it again. If this is not possible, our trackers will continue to track the animal after your departure, to do what is necessary and you'll still be charged the full trophy fee. If the animal is part of your package hunt, then that animal is considered shot and in the bag. We would urge every hunter that hunts at Ragged Stone to be mindful of the basic rules of ethical hunting and sportsman-like conduct. Your assistance and patience may be needed by your professional hunter and fellow hunters, and will be much appreciated when given. Hunting is a sport that has elements of chance and risk inherent in the activity, while we can give you a better than 95% chance at getting all your trophies, there may always be a chance that a missed shot or an unlucky day might see you miss a trophy or finish the hunt without completion of the package. We do stress that this is highly unlikely.
A: During the peak hunting season from April to September, the weather will be warm in the day with cool nights. Daytime temperatures range from 18 ° Celsius to 30 ° Celsius. Night temperatures are cool sometimes reaching as low as 5 ° Celsius. A jumper and windbreaker are both necessary items of kit. In the later months from October onwards it is considered summer and will be very hot in the day and warm at night too. Expect temperatures very much like Singapore 's during these months.
A: Normal clothes in earth colours are the best. Khaki, greens and browns are the most suitable for hunting in and any comfortable casual clothing will do for the hunting lodges. It is advisable to bring comfortable clothes that have been worn several times before as they'll be worn in and not chafe should you walk some distance in the bush. Please bring 1 pair of strong hiking boots and one pair of sports shoes as Ragged Stone terrain can be rough.
A: Cameras, a good pair of binoculars and a knife are good things to have on hunting Safaris. We also find card games, a novel or two and a travel scrabble or chess set are great items to add to your bag.
